Shri Vadilal Hiralal Gandhi School for the Deaf and Speech-Impaired was established in the year 1969, beginning its journey in a rented building with 21 students. Over the years, this humble beginning has grown into a strong and flourishing institution, much like a large banyan tree. Today, 120 students are receiving education at the school.
After completing education up to Standard 8, a critical question arose—what next for Deaf and speech-impaired children? With the objective of enabling these students to earn their livelihood independently, live with dignity, and build a respectable life through vocational skills and self-confidence, the Lions Industrial Training Centre (for Persons with Disabilities) was established in August 2002 with grant-in-aid approval.
Currently, seven vocational trades are operational at the institution, and every year more than 90 trainees receive skill-based vocational training to become self-reliant.

All essential facilities including textbooks, notebooks, uniforms, and medical care are provided completely free of charge. Teaching is carried out by specially trained educators using oral and visual methods suited to the learning needs of Deaf and Speech-Impaired students.
In the primary section, group hearing aids are used to support speech and reading development. Each student is also provided with an individual hearing aid to ensure effective learning. Students are actively encouraged and trained to participate in state-level sports competitions and cultural activities for Deaf and Speech-Impaired children organized by the Government of Gujarat, with excellent facilities and guidance available at the school.

Lions Industrial Training Centre (For Persons with Disabilities)
Since 2002, the Lions Club Society has been running the Lions Industrial Training Institute (ITI), which is recognized by the Employment and Training Department, Government of Gujarat.
At present, training is provided in the following seven vocational trades:
Armature and Motor Rewinding (Electrical)
Cutting and Tailoring
Plumbing Assistant
Two-Wheeler Auto Repair
Hair and Skin Care (Beauty Services)
Offset Printing
Desktop Publishing (DTP – Computer)
In the year 2002, the ITI project received substantial financial support from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to promote vocational education for students with disabilities.
This institution is proud to be the first and only organization in Gujarat providing ITI-level vocational training exclusively for persons with disabilities. To date, 1,485 differently-abled students have successfully secured employment after completing their training.
62, B.J. Biradari Hall (Hostel for Students with Disabilities)
Trainees enrolled at the Lions ITI come from remote areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Many of these students belong to economically weaker and socially marginalized families, making it impossible for them to pursue training without residential support.
To ensure that no student is deprived of skill development due to financial hardship, the institution established 62, B.J. Biradari Hall, a free residential hostel for students with disabilities. All expenses related to accommodation and meals are borne entirely by the institution.
This initiative enables students to focus fully on their education and vocational training, helping them build a dignified and independent future.
